Prescription drug coverage is one of the Medicare areas where plan details can make a major difference. Every Medicare plan with drug coverage uses a formulary, which is the plan’s list of covered medications.
What are drug tiers?
Plans generally organize covered prescriptions into tiers. Lower tiers often have lower cost sharing, while higher tiers can cost more. The same drug may be placed on different tiers by different plans, so checking only whether a medication is “covered” is not enough.
What is the 2027 Part D out-of-pocket threshold?
For 2027, the annual Part D out-of-pocket threshold is $2,400. Once your qualifying Part D out-of-pocket costs reach that threshold, you enter catastrophic coverage and owe $0 for covered Part D drugs for the remainder of the calendar year.
What should you check before enrolling?
- Every prescription name and dosage.
- The formulary status of each medication.
- The tier assigned to each drug.
- Your preferred and in-network pharmacies.
- Whether prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits apply.
- The deductible and expected copays or coinsurance.
