Choosing a Medicare Advantage Plan in Florida: 7 Checks

The best Medicare Advantage plan for you is the one that fits your care, prescriptions, budget, and location. A popular company name or attractive extra benefit does not settle those questions. Two neighbors can reasonably choose different plans.

If you are comparing Medicare Advantage plans in Florida, use the seven checks below to create a practical shortlist. This is an educational comparison method, not a ranking of specific insurance companies.

1. Start with your county and the correct plan year

Use your ZIP code and county in Medicare Plan Finder. Make sure every comparison uses the coverage year you need. Do not carry a previous year’s premium or benefit promise into a new-year decision without checking the new documents.

If you are still learning the basics, read our introduction to Medicare Advantage first.

2. Confirm your doctors and hospitals

Make a short list of the providers you most want to keep: primary care, specialists, hospitals, and any regular treatment facilities. Check the exact plan network with both the insurer and the provider’s office. “We take that insurance company” is not the same as confirming participation in the specific plan.

Keep the date and details of your confirmation. If a provider is essential, resolve uncertainty before enrollment.

3. Price your prescriptions at your pharmacy

Enter each medication’s name, strength, quantity, and frequency in the comparison tool. Review pharmacy choices and any coverage restrictions in the plan documents. A plan can look inexpensive until your own prescription list is included.

Ask what happens if a medication needs prior authorization or an exception. Do not stop or change a prescribed medication just to fit an insurance comparison; discuss treatment decisions with your clinician.

4. Compare costs beyond the monthly premium

Request a written summary of doctor visits, specialist care, hospital stays, outpatient services, and the plan’s medical out-of-pocket limit. Account for drug costs separately. Keep any Medicare premiums you must continue paying in your household budget.

For your own comparison, write down a normal-care scenario and a heavier-care scenario. The purpose is to see whether the plan remains affordable when you need it, not to predict a medical event.

5. Understand HMO and PPO rules

Plan types can affect how you access care. Medicare explains that a PPO generally charges less in network and allows covered out-of-network care at a higher cost, subject to applicable provider and coverage rules. Do not interpret “PPO” as a promise that every doctor will see you.

Ask each plan about referrals, prior authorization, and routine out-of-network services. Medicare’s plan-type comparison offers a starting reference; the plan documents provide the details.

6. Check travel and seasonal living needs

Tell the person helping you compare plans if you spend part of the year outside Florida. Ask specifically about routine follow-up care, refills, and specialist visits while away. Emergency coverage and routine out-of-area care are different questions.

7. Review extra benefits last

For dental, vision, hearing, or other benefits, ask about provider restrictions, covered services, allowances, and frequency limits. An extra benefit should improve a plan that already works for your medical needs—not distract from a doctor or prescription mismatch.

When can you make a change?

Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, with changes effective January 1 when the plan receives the request by the deadline. Other enrollment opportunities depend on your situation. Switching to Original Medicare does not automatically guarantee that you can buy any Medigap policy you want.
